How Many Litter Boxes Do You Need for Multiple Cats?
← Back to the Complete Multi-Cat Household Guide

🐱🐱🚽
Two cats, two boxes. Should be fine!
Day 1
🙀🚽
Accident outside the box again.
Day 5
🚽🚽🚽
Rule: one per cat, plus one. Spread out.
Day 6
🐱👍
Calm at last. Every cat has options.
Day 20
- One per cat, plus one. Two cats need three boxes, three cats need four, which absorbs the friction when cats avoid each other.
- Spread them out. Three boxes in one closet count as one location, so put them on different floors or in different zones.
- Scoop and compare. Scooping less than daily means more boxes, so track use for two weeks after any change and compare before and after instead of guessing.
The tracker's Litter Box Visits column lets you compare each cat's counts before and after the change, so download the Multi-Cat Household Health & Litter Tracker and check that it worked.
